In 1856, Henry Johnson established a railway depot/post office on a small plot of land where a new railroad line was under construction. Johnson City, Tennessee (originally part of North Carolina) is today a thriving community offering outstanding affordability and quality of life 150 years after Henry built his modest train depot. With an economy based largely upon medical and educational services and nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Johnson City offers stunningly favorable amenities for a smaller metropolitan area. As a business location, Johnson City is centrally located to the Atlanta, Charlotte, and Washington, D. C. metropolitan areas with an amazing 65% of the U.S. population available with 1 or 2-day UPS service. The city is located 60 miles north of Asheville, North Carolina along Interstate 26.
With limited traffic congestion, quality retail and residential developments, an environment with a Clean Air certification by the Environmental Protection Agency (one of only 2 metro areas in Tennessee in Air Quality Attainment), Johnson City's quality of life is a prime attraction. The area is a treasure for outdoor enthusiasts with recreational amenities including TVA lakes, mountain rivers and streams, Western North Carolina ski resorts, abundant golf courses and extensive parks, all in close proximity. Historically sheltered from major storm systems, including tornadoes and hurricane-related flooding events, Johnson City and Washington County residents enjoy appreciating property values, extremely low taxes, and predicable insurance rates.
